Unlocking social imagination: breaking free from fatalism (part 2)

In part two of this three-part series on social imagination, Mark Swift, CEO of Wellbeing Enterprises CIC and Visiting Fellow at the Heseltine Institute, turns attention to the barrier of fatalism in public policy.

While social imagination provides a route to creating more humane, equitable, and resilient public systems, progress is often obstructed not only by institutional inertia but also by the pervasive belief that change is impossible.

The first part of this series highlighted how imagination can move us beyond short-term crisis management and open the door to more hopeful and purposeful public services. Building on that foundation, this second instalment considers how overcoming fatalism is essential if those possibilities are ever to take root.
